Port Melbourne has come a long way from the industrial area it once was. There’s still a huge industrial presence there (which can make a desired family photography backdrop). With the influx of apartments, new homes and cafes and bars, Port Melbourne has become one of the most sought-after suburbs for young singles and young families. It’s one of the most desirable places for families with lots of places for your family to enjoy … meaning we can also find beautiful spots to photograph here. The beach and the city are both a stone’s throw away, which makes it ideal for those shoots where you want to combine the city feel with the relaxed and quietness away from it. Perfect for a location shoot with different aspects. Although it’s a high-density area quite close to Melbourne’s CBD, Port Melbourne is a surprisingly quiet suburb.
Family Photography in Port Melbourne
While surrounding suburbs such as Albert Park, Middle Park, South Melbourne have always had a fancier profile, Port Melbourne has even the better spots for photography (you just can’t beat the beach!). Bay Street in Port Melbourne is a lively strip with lots of hip cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques – photographing in your local cafe there is no problem when you ask the owner beforehand for permission (making sure that no other people are in the shots). During the summer months, these Port Melbourne spots are bustling, especially the beachfront locations as people come together to enjoy dining or some drinks while watching a magnificent sunset. So plan the time for your shoot in the more quieter times such as early mornings or on a normal weekday instead of a weekend.
Best photolocations in Port Melbourne
Port Melbourne is a fantastic location for a family photography session.
Industrial areas & Beach
You can take your pick of the vibrant or industrial areas or the calm and quiet beach. Port Melbourne has a dog-friendly beach if you want to bring your four-legged friend along on your family photo shoot.
Station Pier and Princess Pier
Palm trees line the long path that connects Port Melbourne to its neighbouring suburbs. The harbour is also beautiful to use as a backdrop, with the Station Pier (where Spirit of Tasmania is docked) and Princes Pier being at the top of our list of photography locations in Port Melbourne.
Sandridge Lookout
The Sandridge Lookout has the city skyline in the background. At certain times during the week, it’s a very quiet spot for photography.
Maritime Cove
The Maritime Cove Community playground is great for those with young kids. There’s lots of equipment to keep them occupied (and produce smiles for photos) and they can watch the ships sail by from there.
And many more photo locations
There are also lovely restaurants and cafes along the waterfront which you and your family can choose for a private family meal which we can photograph. Port Melbourne is home to Melbourne’s only ‘pink lake’ but we’re not too keen on using it for a family photo location – it’s just not impressive enough as pink lakes go. There is plenty of corners and settings close-by which make great spots for photography – sometimes it’s thinking outside the box.
